What is the new Plastic Packaging Tax?

You may already be aware of the UK Plastic Packaging Tax – a proposed new tax that is set to come into force from April 2022.

The tax is expected to affect (subject to an exemption):

1. UK manufacturers of plastic packaging (and their business customers)
2. Plastic packaging importers (and their business customers)
3. Consumers (who buy plastic packaging or goods which are in plastic packaging, in the UK)

‘Plastic packaging’ is regarded as that which is:

• produced in/imported into the UK
• contains less than a minimum of 30% recycled plastic
• predominantly plastic by weight
